Huy Presents at United Nations Town Hall in Washington, DC

On October 31, 2023, Huy pro bono counsel Vince Redhouse joined a small group for an intimate Town Hall meeting with Ms. Ashwini K.P., the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance.  This event was part of the Special Rapporteur's official country visit to the United States.

At far right, the Special Rapporteur's aide is shown with a copy of Huy's recent submission to the U.N. Human Rights Committee.

The Townhall was organized by the International Institute on Race, Equality and Human Rights, in Washington, D.C.  This event was the first stop that the Special Rapporteur made in her country visit.  The Special Rapporteur will also be visiting Detroit, Flint, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Atlanta, before returning to Washington, D.C to meet with federal officials.  At the end of her visit, the Special Rapporteur will hold a press conference in New York.

The information gathered at the Town Nall event will be used in the Special Rapporteur's discussions with U.S. officials and will result in a full report from her to the United Nations Human Rights Council next year.

Vince used his invitation to elevate the issues raised by Huy in its recent submission to the U.N. Human Rights Committee, Concerning Religious Freedoms of Indigenous Persons Deprived of Their Liberty in the United States of America, in Relation to the United States' 5th Periodic Report.  Because the Special Rapporteur was not visiting any tribes, Vince also used the opportunity to raise issues of systemic racism experienced by Native Americans in the United States.

Vince provided the Special Rapporteur with a copy of Huy's recent submission to the U.N. Human Rights Committee.
